Read Yotsuba&! in Japanese

Immersion Atlas · 471 words and 421 expressions for volumes 1–5

Japanese Yotsuba&! volumes lined up on a shelf, with Volume 1's sunflower cover displayed in front.

Yotsubato was the first manga I read in Japanese. I think it's a great stepping stone into consuming content intended for native speakers.

Even though the manga is beginner-friendly, it can definitely be tricky at times. Yotsuba uses very childish language, and the extensive use of kana can sometimes make it harder to decipher exactly what's being said.

As this was my first manga, it was sometimes also hard for me to read the “font” of the text, even though I knew all the hiragana and katakana. The manga often uses text to express emotion, so the characters can look quite different from their “standard” writing.

These things felt frustrating at first, but I quickly grew used to them as I worked my way through the volumes. So I'd encourage you not to worry too much about it.

I think the main benefit of going through this guide, and maybe reviewing the Anki deck before diving into the books, is that you'll have a much better chance of enjoying them without being interrupted by having to look up words all the time.

I strongly believe that if we can trick our brains into just enjoying the immersion instead of thinking of it as studying, the language will start to “click” for us much faster.

The guide is separated into volumes, with an option to create a deck that includes everything. It currently covers volumes 1–5. If people find this guide useful, I'll definitely consider adding the rest of the books in the series.

How this was measured

Every volume was scanned and read with OCR, then tokenised with the same kuromoji/IPADIC pipeline that mines the video catalogue, so the two can be compared at all. The automated shortlist requires 3+ uses in a volume. For the chapter-by-chapter reads of volumes one through five, a lower OCR count can qualify only when the word was verified in the scene and is needed to follow it. Every entry, including those manual exceptions, must appear in at least 10 videos across 4 creators of the 17 565-video catalogue and have a JMdict entry. 4 495 of 6 034 words in the books clear that bar; these are 471 of them, chosen by hand for volumes 1–5.

The main examples are written for this guide. A small number of short book lines also appear where the exact wording materially teaches an expression. Each quoted line was checked directly against the book, translated and discussed, and credited by volume and chapter. OCR helps locate a line but can never clear one for quotation.

Yotsuba is five, and her lines are set in kana while the adults answer in kanji. That is the author's device, not a quirk of the scanning: the same word is printed both ways throughout, so each card carries both spellings where the books use both.
