How we measured this

This uses the Japanese catalog snapshot dated 2026-08-30. A channel counts once it has at least 5 analyzed videos and 1,000 tokens, which leaves 31 creators, 662 videos and 725,886 tokens. Every category figure is a median of channel profiles, so a prolific creator does not count for more. Difficulty is our own 0 to 100 measure: it compares channels inside our catalog and is not a JLPT level. 19 categories had enough qualifying channels to rank, and the 396 cpm native baseline is the median of 505 channels outside Japanese Learning, which slows down on purpose.

Every word here was written by hand and then measured: collapsed by lemma, checked against JMdict through the same dictionary the site uses, and published only when it turns up in at least 10 videos from 4 creators. 298 of 324 survived that. The bars rank a word by how many analyzed videos use it. Expressions are explicit patterns rather than automatically extracted phrases, counted over all 528 of 662 cached transcripts and published at 5 videos from 3 creators. Their bars are scaled against each other rather than against the word lists, because a whole phrase is rarer than any single word in it: a five-bar expression is not as common as a five-bar word.

What this cannot tell you: automatic captions contain recognition errors, so we drop suspicious strings and never quote a transcript line back to you. Expression counts include inflected continuations, so read them as reach rather than exact subtitle lines. The easiest and hardest tables only name channels with at least 10 analyzed videos, because one atypical video moves a thin channel's score; thinner channels still count toward the category figures and are still browsable.
